Self Regional Healthcare Rated Among Top 20 Workplaces in World

GREENWOOD—Self Regional Heathcare has learned it is rated one of the top twenty workplaces in the world.
The Gallup Organization on Thursday announced that Self Regional is one of 20 distinguished organizations slated to receive the 2008 Gallup Great Workplace Award later this spring in Omaha, NE. Based on the most rigorous workplace research ever conducted, the local hospital is being honored because its employee engagement results demonstrate Self Regional has a workforce that is among the most productive and engaged in the world.
“This award belongs to our employees,” noted a jubilant M. John Heydel, Self Regional President and CEO. “Their efforts in our Self Excellence program to provide our patients the best quality and most efficient health services has led to outstanding ratings in both patient and employee satisfaction. It shows that providing very good care to our patients is very satisfying to our staff and, in turn, makes them feel even better about their workplace.”
“When you consider only 20 organizations in the world earned this honor, and that only four of these were hospitals, it certainly gives citizens of Greenwood and the Lakelands region something in which they can take exceptional pride,” he added.
Self Regional Board Chairman Len Bornemann said the award says a lot about the commitment each hospital employee has made toward Self Excellence and providing patients and families the best care possible. This has encouraged an environment where people want to come to work and achieve the goals they have established for themselves.
“Gallup recognizes the best-of-the-best organizations in the world that create environments that value people,” he noted. “It says that employees of the hospital feel valued and in turn, they value the people who come to them for care.”
“The Board of Trustees congratulates Self Regional’s leadership and all of the employees and physicians for their commitment to quality, safety and service,” Bornemann added. “They are most deserving of this prestigious award.”
This year’s winning organizations are global in representation. It is only the second year that the Gallup Great Workplace Award has been presented. There were 12 winners last year.
The 2008 Gallup Great Workplace Award recipients are: ABC Supply, Abdul Latif Jameel Co., Ltd., ASB Bank, B&Q, Bharti Airtel Limited, Blue Care Network of Michigan, Borgess Health, Campbell Soup Company, CarMax, Inc., Country Inns & Suites by Carlson, General Growth Properties, Hendrick Health System, Marriott Vacation Club International, Qwest Communications Mass Markets, Self Regional Healthcare, Siam Commercial Bank, St. Joseph Health System, Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong Limited, Stryker and Winegardner & Hammons, Inc.
“When compared to the millions of workplaces we have studied around the world, these organizations have worked tirelessly to create an environment that values people,” said Tom Rath, who leads Gallup’s Workplace and Leadership Consulting practice. “The winners of this award have established a new global standard for engaging people that goes far beyond trivial perks to ensure that each employee has an emotional connection to the company’s mission and growth.”
The Gallup Great Workplace Award is based on two components: database performance and financial performance. Applicants’ results are compared across Gallup’s renowned workplace research database composed of millions of work teams in more than 120 countries. A panel of workplace experts reviews each organization’s portfolio, which includes quantitative and qualitative components, and the award-winning organizations are then named.
Self Regional and the other recipients will be presented their awards at the Gallup Summit 2008, scheduled May 13-15 in Omaha. During the Summit, Heydel and Fred Latham, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Self Regional, will present the best practices they applied to their workplace and the improved business results they achieved through building an engaged workforce.
