Breast Health Program

Whenever someone is informed of a possible breast cancer, it can create strong emotions and concerns.  Many women struggle with these feelings on their own.  Now there is an alternative. The Breast Health Program at Self Regional Healthcare provides a resource for assistance with this emotional journey. Residents of the Lakelands region have access to state-of-the-art cancer care at Self Regional Healthcare. The Breast Health Program enhances breast care services with a team approach. These services help empower women to make informed decisions related to their healthcare.


Program services
Our specialists are trained in benign and malignant disease, diagnosis, treatment and emotional support and are available as a resource as well as patient advocates. The Breast Health coordinator provides emotional support and education to empower women to make informed choices through the care continuum.


Multidisciplinary breast tumor board
This allows collaboration among specialists in reviewing treatment options prior to initiation of therapy. Specialists include surgeons, a radiation oncologist, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists.


Clinical trials
Medical oncologists, in conjunction with major medical centers, provide the most current options available for cancer prevention and treatment through clinical trials.


Fuji Medical Imaging Center for Women
Through the support of FujiFilm, USA, Self Regional Healthcare has developed a state-of-the-art women’s imaging center. This specially designed center at the Imaging Center of Self Regional Healthcare provides a comfortable and private setting for mammography, bone density scans, and other imaging services. Radiologists at the center interpret and explain any irregularities found on mammography or other breast imaging.  Mammograms are reviewed by a radiologist and R2 Computer Aided Detection technology to ensure quality.


Resource center
Located in Self Regional Medical Center, this library and online research center offers videos, books, journals and Internet access. A highly trained staff assists in locating disease-specific information.  The Breast Health coordinator also provides selected educational material.


Support group
A cancer support group meets regularly to help patients cope with the frustration and fears associated with cancer diagnosis.


Registered dietician
Dietary counseling is available on cancer prevention, weight control and weight maintenance, as well as nutrition for cancer patients while undergoing treatment.


Lymphedema Specialist
A licensed occupational therapist certified in lymphedema treatment is on staff and available to provide preventive preoperative education and postoperative lymphedema treatment.

Genetic counseling for high-risk women

Genetic specialists at the Greenwood Genetic Center are available to assist with genetic counseling and to discuss cancer risk factors.


Social workers
A caring staff helps with community referrals and facilitates financial support for cancer patients in need of these services.


Appearance care services
Breast cancer patients at Self Regional Healthcare may feel more comfortable during and after treatment by using the services of Designed by Nature, a local retail store specializing in products for patients such as mastectomy prosthesis, vascular hose, wigs, turbans, and gift accessories.  The American Cancer Society also provides certain cosmetic items to uninsured patients.


Look Good ...
         Feel Better program
Look Good …  Feel Better is a public service program sponsored by the American Cancer Society in partnership with the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation and the National Cosmetology Association.  Look Good …  Feel Better helps women undergoing cancer treatment improve their self-image by learning hands-on beauty techniques to help them overcome the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. The program is held at Self Regional Medical Center.
